Applying to a Spanish university with an overseas school qualification

Spanish university admission depends on your education system and destination institution. Keep qualification recognition, UNEDasiss and applications separate.

Your passport and the country where you attended school may not tell the whole story about university access. Start with the education system that awarded your school qualification and the studies you actually completed. A single checklist for all Latin American applicants cannot resolve every route.

Identify your academic starting point

UNEDasiss distinguishes routes by education system and the requirements met within it. Its classification includes Colombia in a specific access group. That does not mean the same answer applies to every Latin American country. Check the international student categories.

Record the qualification’s exact name, its education system and whether it gives access to university there. Include international-school qualifications: the location of the school alone may not describe the programme you followed.

Choose the degree before choosing tests

The UNEDasiss directory connects education systems, qualifications and destination universities. It warns that universities can update their requirements, so confirm the details with the institution itself. Open the university information directory.

Create a record for each option with the degree, campus, academic year and admission link. Use that intake’s requirements rather than another student’s experience or an earlier year’s conditions. A subject useful for one degree may be assessed differently for another.

Keep the procedures distinct

  • Recognition of the overseas school qualification, where applicable.
  • The accreditation and services requested by the university.
  • Additional examinations or evidence, where required.
  • The university admission application.
  • Enrolment after a place is awarded.

This list organises questions; it does not say everyone must complete all five steps. For each one, record the decision-maker, the document it produces and anything still unconfirmed. Requesting accreditation does not automatically submit an application for a university place.

Build a calendar around the relevant intake

Save the dates published by each institution and distinguish application, document-submission and enrolment deadlines. Do not reuse a 2026 calendar for a later intake without checking it again.

An enquiry becomes more useful once you can say what you studied, where you hope to apply and which point remains unclear. Academic admission and the immigration requirements for coming to Spain need separate consideration.
