Can you apply for a Spanish master’s without homologating your foreign degree?

A university may assess a foreign qualification for master’s access. Check its level, postgraduate access and the requirements of the specific programme.

Do not assume every foreign qualification must be homologated before you apply for a master’s in Spain. Equally, presenting a diploma does not guarantee admission. The answer depends on the education system, qualification level and the particular programme.

The route for qualifications outside the EHEA

Article 18.2 of Royal Decree 822/2021 permits access with certain non-EHEA qualifications without homologación when the university verifies a level equivalent to a Spanish degree and postgraduate access in the issuing country. This does not recognise the qualification for other purposes. Read Article 18.

Ask the admissions team specifically about that assessment. Do not treat it as completed merely because a registration form accepted your details or a marketing email described the programme.

Prepare the information admissions needs

  • The qualification’s official name and issuing institution.
  • Its level and the studies you completed.
  • The academic transcript available.
  • Evidence of the postgraduate access the qualification provides at home.
  • Programme-specific requirements and outstanding questions.

Academic documents do not all use the same terminology. If your diploma says licenciatura, bachelor or a local designation, preserve that name and ask which evidence the university needs. Do not translate the academic level as though recognition had already been granted.

Check which master’s you are applying for

The RUCT provides information on official Spanish university qualifications. Check the exact qualification and university, rather than relying only on the programme’s marketing name. Find the official RUCT information.

Then compare the programme entry with the admission call: academic focus, previous knowledge, language, teaching format and documents. If the programme relates to a regulated profession, ask specifically about its entry conditions and effects.

Admission is only one part of the plan

Before paying a reservation fee, ask about outstanding steps, financial terms and what happens if your documentation remains incomplete. Keep the reply with the specific offer you received.

Academic admission must also be distinguished from arrangements for entering or staying in Spain. Confirm programme admission and the documents needed for your move separately.
