A doctorate in Spain with a foreign qualification: access and programme admission

Check the academic access route and the doctoral programme’s admission criteria. Assessment of a foreign qualification does not recognise it for every purpose.

A doctoral project starts with two separate checks: whether your qualifications provide academic access and whether a particular programme can admit you. The second question involves the research area, intake and university criteria, as well as your degrees.

The route depends on the qualification’s education system

Article 6.2 of Royal Decree 99/2011 provides routes without homologación: EHEA qualifications at level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework that permit doctoral access at home, or non-EHEA qualifications assessed by the university as equivalent to a master’s and permitting doctoral access at home. This does not recognise the qualification for other purposes. Read Articles 6 and 7.

Describe your qualifications exactly as recorded. If you do not know what access the award provides in its issuing country, ask the institution how it can confirm this. Years of study alone do not replace that assessment.

Find a programme that fits your research question

Write a page outlining your topic, the question you want to investigate, the material or method that interests you and its connection with your previous studies. Use it to compare research areas. You do not need a completed thesis, but you should be able to explain the proposed research and why the programme is relevant.

Read the admission call and ask which selection criteria apply. Article 7 permits additional requirements and supplementary training. A positive discussion about your topic should not be confused with formal admission.

Prepare an organised application record

  • Qualifications and academic transcripts available.
  • Evidence of the original qualification’s level and access rights.
  • Research outline and relevant background.
  • Doctoral school and programme requirements.
  • Funding position and intended start dates.

Record which documents you have, which you need and who can issue them. Date versions of your research outline accurately so you know what you shared and which changes were requested.

Admission, funding and relocation need separate answers

Do not assume that academic interest includes a scholarship, employment contract or financial support. Find the relevant funding call and confirm what needs a separate application. Before committing to a move, organise these decisions alongside housing and dates.

If you plan to come to Spain, your circumstances also need to be considered when reviewing the immigration route. A first enquiry can start with the programme, qualifications and calendar, without assuming that a place or funding has been granted.
