“I want to join my family in Spain” is a useful description of your goal, but it is not enough to choose a procedure. Start with the nationality and residence position of the person you will join, then identify your relationship and where each of you is living.

If your family member is Spanish

Spain’s immigration regulation contains a specific residence route for certain foreign family members of Spanish nationals. The relationship matters, but the category and its conditions must still be checked. It is not a route for every relative simply because someone in the family is Spanish. Royal Decree 1155/2024, Articles 93 to 99.

The Ministry’s information sheet identifies covered categories, documentation and procedural distinctions. Use it to review your actual facts rather than treating one family’s experience as a universal checklist. Official information sheet 18.

If your family member is a foreign resident

The general family-reunification provisions have their own requirements. EU-related situations and international mobility permissions can also require different analysis. A checklist for the spouse of a Spanish citizen should not automatically be reused for a parent joining a non-EU temporary resident. Family-reunification provisions, Articles 65 to 71.

Identify the exact permission held by the person in Spain and its validity. A nickname for a card may not be enough; the underlying decision can clarify the position during a secure document review.

Prepare five facts first

  1. All nationalities held by both people.
  2. The exact family relationship.
  3. The country where each person currently lives.
  4. Any Spanish residence permission already held.
  5. Relevant dependency or living arrangements.

Mention previous applications, refusals or changes in marital status at the beginning. These details can affect what needs reviewing and help avoid a document request based on incomplete information.

Check the procedure before making travel plans

Where an application can be made and who submits it depend on the applicable route and circumstances. The Ministry’s guidance distinguishes those situations. Do not buy flights on the assumption that every family application can be started after arrival in Spain.

Make documents tell one consistent story

Check names, dates and relationship evidence across certificates. Where documents come from different countries, review authentication, translation and any applicable exceptions. Keep complete copies rather than isolated pages or screenshots.

At the first enquiry stage, you can describe the relationship and countries involved without sending identity documents through an open form. The detailed evidence can follow through the agreed channel.
