Continuing an overseas degree in Spain: credits, records and admission
If you started a degree abroad, prepare your transcript and course content. Recognised credits, admission criteria and an available place are different issues.

The receiving university handles credit recognition
Articles 22 to 24 of Royal Decree 889/2022 place convalidación with the Spanish receiving university and include official foreign studies that have not been completed. Read the recognition framework.
Choose a specific degree and find its procedure for overseas studies. Do not automatically use a form intended for transfers from another Spanish university. If the procedures have similar names, confirm the correct one first.
Thirty credits do not guarantee a place
Article 45 of Royal Decree 534/2024 distinguishes applicants awarded at least 30 ECTS, subject to university criteria, from those below that threshold. The latter may use the access route for their education system. Read the admission rule.
Do not convert semesters completed into a promised number of recognised credits. Gather the records and obtain the university’s assessment. Keep an alternative admission route in mind if the application does not fit this one.
Your records need to show content as well as grades
For example, the UCM asks for an academic transcript and course programmes for partial recognition. Its conditions and intake must be treated as institution-specific. See the UCM’s published document requirements.
- A complete transcript showing completed courses.
- Course descriptions or syllabuses for the period studied.
- Credits or hours clearly identified, without your own conversion.
- The institution issuing each record.
- The destination degree’s requirements and outstanding questions.
If you no longer have an old syllabus, ask the original university how to obtain it. A summary written from memory does not serve the same purpose as an academic record issued by the institution.
Compare the decision with your study plan
When a decision arrives, check which courses are recognised, what remains and the enrolment steps. Base your calendar and budget on that information rather than an early estimate of the years you might save.
A useful enquiry identifies your original course, destination degree and available records. If continuing your studies also means moving to Spain, immigration planning needs its own assessment.
